Grade Calculator

Your grade is the points you earned divided by the points possible, or, if your class uses weights, each score times its weight, added up and divided by the total weight. Type your scores to see your grade and letter at once.

Your grade

85.88%B

  • Your weights add up to 80%, so each one was scaled to make 100%. This is normal when some work, like the final, is not graded yet.

What do I need on my final?

How is my grade calculated?

Weighted grade = (score 1 × weight 1 + score 2 × weight 2 + …) ÷ (weight 1 + weight 2 + …). Points grade = points earned ÷ points possible × 100.

Worked example (weights). The class above: Homework 92% weighted 20%, Quizzes 85% weighted 20%, Midterm 78% weighted 25%, Project 46/50 (92%) weighted 15%.

Multiply and add: 92 × 20 + 85 × 20 + 78 × 25 + 92 × 15 = 6870.

The weights add up to 80, so the grade is 6870 ÷ 80 = 85.88%, a B on the plus/minus scale.

Worked example (points). Scores of 46/50, 18/20, 88/100 make 152 points out of 170. 152 ÷ 170 × 100 = 89.41%, a B+.

Points or weights: which does my class use?

Look at your syllabus or your school’s online gradebook. If it lists categories with percents, like “Homework 20%, Tests 50%”, your class uses weights: choose Weights and type each category’s average with its weight (or use the weighted grade calculator, which averages each category for you). If every assignment just has points, like 46/50, choose Points. A big test then counts more simply because it has more points.

How do I see what a future score will do?

Type it in the What if? rows. Your grade now stays at the top, and the line below shows your grade with the what-if scores added. To work backwards from the grade you want, use the final grade calculator.

Can I keep more than one class?

Yes, two ways. Copy link keeps the whole class in a link you can bookmark or send, and nothing reaches us. Or tick Save my classes on this device, name the class at the top and press Save this class. Saved classes can be opened again here and added to the GPA calculator to work out your GPA.

Questions about your grade

How do I calculate my grade?

With points, add up the points you earned and divide by the points possible: 152 out of 170 is 89.41%. With weights, multiply each score by its weight, add those up and divide by the total of the weights. The calculator above does both as you type.

What if my weights don’t add up to 100%?

We divide by the weights you have, which scales them up to 100%. This is normal partway through a term: if the final (20%) is not graded yet, your other weights add to 80% and your grade is worked out from those. Our example class shows it: 85.88%.

How does “drop the lowest” work?

Pick how many scores to drop. We try every choice and drop the score or scores that help your grade the least, which is how most online gradebooks do it. With points, that is not always the lowest percent: a low score on a big test can hurt more than a lower one on a short quiz.

How is extra credit counted?

In points mode, extra credit points are added to the points you earned but not to the points possible, so 90 of 100 plus 5 extra is 95%. In weights mode, the extra credit is added straight to your grade as percentage points. Teachers handle extra credit in different ways, so check your syllabus.

Is an 89.5 an A?

Only if your teacher rounds. With rounding to a whole number, 89.5 becomes 90, an A on a 10-point scale. Without it, 89.5 stays a B (or a B+ on a plus/minus scale). Tick “Round to a whole percent” in the grading scale settings to match your class.

Do you see or keep my grades?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent to us. “Copy link” puts your class in the page address after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server. “Save my classes” is off until you tick it, and then keeps classes in this browser only.
